SADIE
Great Dane
Female
4 1/2 yrs old

***SAD UPDATE 09/16/05: Sadly today at 3.50pm Sadie went to the Rainbow Bridge, it seems the months of neglect prior to coming under our care had taken their toll on her body, and after 2 months of responding to treatment her organs began failing and she started declining rapidly. Her body was exhausted and she was ready to go. We are grateful to her foster Mom and family who ensured that her last two months of life was full of enjoyment and love and share in their sadness over this beautiful graceful gentle giant. Rest in Peace Sadie. ~~Don't cry because I've left (for in truth only my body has gone) instead rejoice because i was here.~~ ***

08/07/05 Sadie was released to us on an emergency basis yesterday (Saturday afternoon) due to severe medical issues that required Urgent treatment, the owner was not able to provide for medical care for her, and decided to relinquish her to our care. On first sight it was obvious Sadie was desperately in need of medical care and our first fears were severe heart failure. Our Rescue Vet - Dr Seng - kindly agreed to meet down at his surgery for an emergency examination where he confirmed Right side heart failure, 3 1/2 gallons of fluid were tapped and drained from her abdomen, - even after that she still looks like a walking water bed! (it was not safe to drain all fluid of her as there is risk of going into severe shock) Poor Sadie had been walking around in this condition for over a week, and last night, she was able to enjoy a well deserved good nights sleep on a comfy couch! Sadie is obviously very tired , but is now on medication - and will be for the rest of her life - and will be monitored for the next couple of weeks till we assess the long term prognosis for her.

UPDATE 08/09/05: Sadie seems to be responding well to plenty of love and treatment, the swelling on her legs are going down, - she has something that does actually resemble Great Dane legs now! After sleeping most of Saturday evening and Sunday, she is starting to look brighter and join in family life - be it resting her head on the kitchen table waiting for food to slide her way! or resting her head on your lap getting lots of pets and hugs.! Our vet is being kept informed of her progress and she will be seeing him later this week for an examination.
